Choosing the perfect painting for your space is a decision that goes beyond mere aesthetics.

It’s an opportunity to express your personality, create a welcoming atmosphere, and enrich the space.

In this article, we will explore the key points to consider to ensure you make the right choice.

Art is Pleasure

First and foremost, remember that the painting you choose will be a constant presence in your daily life. It should resonate with you, evoke positive emotions, and inspire you every time you look at it.

What is the Goal?

Ask yourself what impact you want the painting to have in the room. Should it blend in with the existing decor or become the visual centerpiece of the room?

The choice of size and colors will depend on this goal.

Space and Dimensions

A balance between size and the surrounding environment is essential to prevent the painting from becoming too overwhelming or going unnoticed.

In general, a painting should:

Occupy about two-thirds of the wall it is hung on.

Be smaller than the furniture near which it will be placed.

The budget

It will influence the type of artwork you can consider. From original pieces to screen prints, there are options for every budget.

Also, exploreemerging artists for an affordable alternative and a way to support emerging creativity.

The Atmosphere

Choose colors and styles that reflect the environment you want to create in the room.

From neutral tones for a relaxing atmosphere (bedroom) to vibrant colors to add energy, each choice contributes to shaping the atmosphere.

Consistency of Style

Look for visual harmony between the painting and the rest of the decor.

Paintings with soft lines and broad brush-strokes pair well with similar furniture, while works with sharp lines and sharper details (such as geometric abstracts) suit a more modern and linear decor.

You can also decide to intentionally create a contrast between your furnishings and your art, being careful not to overly disrupt the balance of the composition.

The Frame

It should further enhance the painting. It shouldn’t be too imposing to overshadow the beauty of the work, nor too simple to detract from it.

A linear frame will be perfect for a modern painting in a modern setting, but it can also contrast with it, while an antique frame will enhance a painting with a classic flavor in a linear and contemporary environment.

Natural frames can be paired with wooden furniture, while gilded frames can provide a vintage touch to a more modern interior.

Lastly, remember that a painting can shine even without a frame.

Lighting

The painting should be illuminated from above to enhance it, not highlight flaws or create annoying reflections.

Mix of Styles or Homogeneity?

When hanging multiple paintings on the same wall:

Divide the works according to the painting support and hang them in the same areas.

If a vintage print goes well with an oil painting, it just doesn’t belong next to a black and white photograph.

Watercolors would clash with a conceptual contemporary work.

At What Height to Hang a Painting? At eye level.

If the paintings are aligned at the bottom, they should be about 120 cm from the ground.

You can hang them with the midpoint of the painting at 140 cm from the floor.

A Mirror Instead of a Painting: Why not?

It adds volume and brightness to the environment. If the mirror has been crafted by an artist, the choice is perfect.

Before Making Holes in the wall…

Do some tests by placing the paintings on the floor to see how they will appear on the wall

Maintain a geometric organization, always seeking visual balance.

In Conclusion:

Opt for a subject that inspires you and reflects your personality. You might choose an abstract work to add a touch of mystery or a relaxing landscape to create a tranquil atmosphere.

The artwork should make you feel good every time you look at it. In the end, art is an expression of your inner self and should resonate with you on an emotional level.
